Infra Modernization at RedWit: Enhanced Operational Excellence
Redwit, the company that developed the Digital Research Note ‘Goono’, migrated to Google Cloud and minimized the service operation burden and enhanced security.
Customer Introduction
ReDWit empowers researchers, institutions, and industries to seamlessly manage and share research data through its innovative blockchain-based electronic lab notebook system, GOONO. GOONO securely stores, organizes, and facilitates effortless data retrieval, fostering collaboration and propelling research forward.
Challenge (Painpoint)
ReDWit needed continuous service development and expansion to update its offerings. In the existing on-premises environment, it was difficult to adopt new technologies and scale up, so there was a need to provide products to customers more efficiently and securely. In other words, they hoped to introduce Google Cloud to scale their services flexibly and to improve productivity by easily adopting cloud technologies.
Therefore, ReDWit adopted a managed service-oriented architecture based on Google Cloud to ensure high availability and minimize operational overhead. They also aimed to meet the security certification standards for SaaS solutions and to enhance their solutions, and they proceeded with the project with Cloocus.
Solution
Considering the scalability of the service, Cloocus proposed using Google Kubernetes Engine(GKE) and Cloud Run, and deployed GKE as a regional cluster to minimize service downtime. Additionally, by building a CI/CD platform based on Cloud Build and migrating on-premises MariaDB using MyDumper, the existing application was successfully migrated to the Google Cloud.
- List of Google Cloud Products used in this project
– Google Kubernetes Engine
– Cloud SQL for MySQL
– Cloud Build
– Cloud Source Repository
– Cloud Storage
– Cloud Run
Result
ReDWit was able to solve the problems of the on-premise operating environment by building a development environment in the Google Cloud environment. First, they integrated code updates and changes faster through the CI/CD pipeline, shortened the release cycle of services, and improved the productivity of the development team by more than 30%. They also reduced the time spent on managing the DB infrastructure by migrating the MariaDB on-premise to the managed service Cloud SQL. In terms of security, they ensured private access to the network and database, and enabled secure access through Bastion server and VPN.
